Your immigration status is completely irrelevant, and the police should not ask you about that. Beyond your right to protect yourself, being a victim of a crime in the United States can make you eligible for a visa that eventually leads to residency. Although not all crimes qualify, some of those that do include sexual abuse, rape, kidnapping, armed assault, extortion, among many other crimes.
