Naturalization requirements

Naturalization, or applying for citizenship, is the process by which a person can become a citizen in the United States. To become a citizen, it is important to meet certain requirements.

The first requirement is to have been a permanent resident for 3 or 5 years. It's 3 years if you obtained your residency through your US citizen spouse and are still married. Three months before completing 3 or 5 years, you can apply for citizenship.

The second requirement is that you speak English, as there is a test on English comprehension, reading, and speaking. You are eligible to take the exam in your native language if you have been a resident for 15 years and are 55 years old or if you have been a resident for 20 years and are 50 years old.

The third requirement is to learn about the history, government, and laws of the United States. This is done through a 10-question test, where you need to answer 6 out of 10 correctly. We can provide you with the 100 questions from which those 10 will be chosen. You are eligible for a simplified version of the exam if you are 65 years old and have been a resident for 20 years.

The fourth requirement is that you have shown good moral character for the past 5 years. In other words, you should not have any arrests, you must have declared and paid your taxes, and you must not have child support debts. If you have any offenses outside of those 5 years, it is important to let us know to assess if it will affect your application.

Lastly, you must be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance. At the end of the process, you will need to attend a naturalization ceremony and take an oath of loyalty to the United States. This oath demonstrates your commitment to respecting the laws and defending the values of the nation.
