Initially created by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the TN work visa is a unique work visa that is available to Mexican and Canadian nationals. This work visa is especially popular based on the following factors.
Compared to many other work visas such as H-1B, L-1, or O-1 work visas, the TN visa application process is generally faster and more straightforward. Canadian TN visa applicants can often apply directly at the U.S. port of entry (such as land border or an airport) and Mexican TN visa applicants can apply through a U.S. consulate of embassy. As opposed to other work visas that require an application process through USCIS, the TN visa process significantly reduces processing times.
More, the TN work visa provides a list of eligible professions to qualify for the visa. This list includes popular professions such as accountants, engineers, computer system analysts, scientific technicians, economists and others. As opposed to other work visas, the TN visa does not always require the completion of a university degree.
Also, as opposed to the H-1B work visa, the TN visa is not subject to a numerical cap and a lottery system. H-1B visa applicants must usually go through a registration process to go through a lottery process to hopefully get selected to apply for the work visa. A good number of applicants do not get selected and lose the chances of applying for a visa. Conversely, TN visa applicants can apply for the work visa without worrying about an annual quote being reached.
Lastly, the TN visa can be renewed indefinitely for increments of three or four years, as long as the visa holder continues to meet the eligibility criteria for their specific profession. This provides a degree of long-term flexibility for eligible professions who may need to work in the United States for an extended period of time.
